Our clinic has the expertise and experience to administer various non-invasive treatment options that gently manipulate the spine returning it to its normal state, and in many cases relieve the pressure caused by the herniated or bulging disc providing relief to your back pain. Bulging Disc – Disc ProtrusionĪ Disc herniation is normally a further development of a previously existing disc protrusion, in which the outermost layers of the annulus fibrosus are still intact, but can bulge when the disc is under pressure. A spinal disc herniation is an injury to the cushioning and connective tissue between vertebrae, usually caused by excessive strain or trauma to the spine. Herniated discs may cause the muscles served by the affected nerves to weaken. While bulging discs can be extremely painful, they frequently occur without any symptoms. Over time, they naturally become flattened and lose their flexibility. The discs in your spine provide a natural cushion between the vertebrae. Herniated discs often cause a radiating numbness or tingling to the body part served by the compressed or pinched nerve. Bulging discs occur as a result of an injury, excessive strain, or the natural aging process. Each disk is a flat, circular capsule about. Pain is often described as sharp or burning and can be mild to excruciating. Spinal disks are rubbery pads between the vertebrae, the specialized bones that make up the spinal column. If the herniated disc is in the neck, typically the pain will be felt in the shoulder and arm. If the herniated disc is in the lower back, typically the most pain will be felt in the buttocks, thigh and calf. The pain caused by a herniated or bulging disc is the result of pressure being applied to the surrounding nerve in the spine. In most cases a herniated or bulging disc only causes pain to one side of the body. It can also pinch the delicate nerves that pass by as they come out of the spine. Where the pain is felt depends on the location of the herniation in relation to the spine. When a disc bulges or herniates it is a major cause of back pain. Most herniated discs occur in the lower back, although they can also occur in the neck. These changes can cause the outer layer of the disk to bulge out fairly evenly all the way around its circumference so it looks a little like a hamburger that's too big for its bun. Herniated discs can occur in any part of the spine. Over time, disks dehydrate and their cartilage stiffens. Due to this displacement, the disc presses on spinal nerves, often producing pain, which may be severe. It may result in back pain, pain or sensation in different parts of the body. Disks show signs of wear and tear with age. A disc herniation is an injury to the cushioning and connective tissue between vertebrae, usually caused by excessive strain or trauma to the spine.
